Is my skin DRY or DEHYDRATED??

Many of us assume that the terms ‘dry’ and ‘dehydrated’ mean the same thing when describing our skin.

The truth is that all skin can be dehydrated. People are born with their dry skin types, but dehydrated skin can happen to anyone.

Dehydrated skin may seem dry, but it’s not the same has having a dry skin type.

Dry skin is characterized by fewer oil-producing glands on the face and body. Using a face oil as part of your skincare routine will give it a great boost.

Dehydrated skin, on the other hand, is a lack of water, not oil. Unlike dry skin, dehydration is treatable with lifestyle changes.

A good test, is to pinch your cheek and squeeze it lightly. If it's wrinkling with gentle pressure instead of holding its shape, your skin cells are desperate for water.

In the case of dry skin, decreased oil production results in abnormal barrier function resulting in red, inflamed and itchy skin. Dry skin often feels rough and can look flaky.

Dehydrated skin on the other hand looks dull, feels tight and shows accelerated signs of aging such as an increased number of fine lines and wrinkles.

Although it can be tempting to use rich, thick moisturisers in an attempt to quench dehydrated skin, it’s important not to confuse moisturisation with hydration when dealing with skin that’s lacking in water. If your skin is dehydrated, you need to actively add water back into the skin. ⠀

Look for a hydrating serum with hyaluronic acid, which retains an impressive 1,000 times its weight in water — and will add a healthy dose of hydration back into the skin.⠀

Dehydrated skin is a very common problem affecting all genders and skin types.

Just because you have an oily skin type doesn’t mean your skin isn’t dehydrated — and if your skin is dehydrated, it can actually exacerbate your oil issues.⠀

People with oily skin often have a compromised barrier function, which makes it hard for their skin to retain moisture. As moisture leaves the skin, it becomes dehydrated, causing the skin to produce more oil.⠀

Even though drinking water is very important to dehydrated skin, it can’t fight dehydration on its own. It's very important not to drink too much water, as this can lead to a loss in minerals - eat water-rich vegetables and fruits instead.
